‘Hel Yes!’ Finnish Designers, Finnish Food
Posted on 09.22.10 to art, design, eventi, lifestyle, news by Tahiyya JurdineMy most beloved combination, food & design, could not have been better accomplished than by Hel Yes!’s restaurant/exhibition space.
As part of the London Design Festival, Hel Yes! has created a bespoke restaurant space, with designed seating, crockery, utensils, and ultimately a designed experience. Romanticised gothic touches are apparent throughout the converted Londonewcastle Depot , giving it a Tim Burtonesque feel, with one main projector focused on some sort of mythical bat creature-probably tied to Finnish forest folklore. To take the concept further, forest trees seem to grow from the dinner table. Thinly arched, the branches creepily enclose the diners, making it a fantastical dining experience. Keeping in suite with Nordic style, the space is very raw, no frills, as is the food. Key Finnish ingredients, fish, game and preserved plants, made it a bare bones eating fare.
The restaurant is only one aspect of Hel Yes!’s concept, they have also organised an impressive range of events, including talks with artists, designers, architects, curators, urban philosophers, chefs and musicians.
As Finland has recently been nominated the next World Design Capital 2012, Hel Yes! is a must see.
